But oddly enough, most of the liberated drones Soji is helping rehabilitate are, in fact, Romulans. Rhamda knows Soji as “The Destroyer.” So does Picard’s Romulan. The Romulan baddies whispering in a dark hallway with canted angles is just too much. Soji knows way too much about Ramdha. The same can’t be said for the characters hanging out on the Borg artifact, though part of that is due to its primary concern, Soji (Isa Briones), remaining a mystery to herself.
And at the end, when Jean-Luc uttered his immortal catchphrase “Engage,” it felt like “Picard” had done just that.
Back on the Borg Cube, we meet the director of this whole project to rescue some drones and use their technology for whatever purpose the Romulans want: Hugh! That’s not the feel of Picard’s home, but the Zhat Vash are on to him and mount an assassination attempt. Classic. Hmm…. The third episode of Star Trek: Picard oddly opens with a quick montage of the Mars attack from last week, which almost plays like a dream sequence but turns out to just be there to catch … does.
This guy already has more life and personality than all of the other new characters on this show combined. ), but by the end of the episode Picard and his new team are ready to head off into space and the next chapter of this adventure. The episode proceeds like this for awhile, crosscutting between Picard’s effort to recruit Cristobal Rios (Santiago Cabrera) as his pilot, Soji’s tiptoeing around Ramdha, Raffi’s researching the data Picard sent her way, and a brief aside with Rios, whose ship is empty but for him and the Emergency Medical Hologram (also Cabrera), whose bedside manner is more boyfriendish than doctorish.
Not even Jean-Luc’s anti-Starfleet screed on TV (or whatever you call the 24th Century version of TV) made her happy. This is where the episode’s crosscutting is at its best, as Picard’s interrogation of a surviving Romulan attacker is juxtaposed against Soji’s interview. Rhamda takes a gun and tries to kill herself.
It’s time for what’s next. is finally ready to head out into open space in search of the unknown, its exploration of Starfleet’s failure as an intergalactic force for good shifted to the backburner as Picard establishes his crew and faces down the threat of the Zhat Vash. It’s as large as a city and repurposed to act as a housing complex and laboratory. Latinum?
