Hine’s focus on the dignity of the American worker would last a quarter century, culminating in his magnificent photographs of the construction of the Empire State Building in 1931 and in the classic book Men at Work.
In the 1920s and early 1930s, Hine made a series of "work portraits," which emphasized the human contribution to modern industry. He became a teacher in New York City at the Ethical Culture School, where he encouraged his students to use photography as an educational medium. Occasionally he made enlargements for exhibtions or copy photographs that he cut up collaged with other images, and rephotographed.
